New software installed: gcc4, octave, libs

New software has been installed on the cluster nodes. It’s mostly development libraries plus the GCC compiler suite version 4 and GNU Octave.

In order to use the GCC 4 compiler suite, you have to append a “4” to the usual command names (e.g. g++4).

From the octave website:

GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with Matlab. It may also be used as a batch-oriented language.

Here’s the full list of new software including version numbers:

  • curl-devel-7.12.1-8.rhel4
  • e2fsprogs-devel-1.35-12.4.EL4
  • fftw3-3.1.2-5.el4
  • fftw3-devel-3.1.2-5.el4
  • gcc4-4.1.0-18.EL4
  • gcc4-c++-4.1.0-18.EL4
  • gcc4-gfortran-4.1.0-18.EL4
  • gperf-3.0.1-4
  • krb5-devel-1.3.4-33
  • libgomp-4.1.0-18.EL4
  • libidn-devel-0.5.6-1
  • openssl-devel-0.9.7a-43.11
  • texinfo-4.7-5
  • octave-3.0.1

New kernel versions

majorana and all nodes are running from now on with kernel version 2.6.9-67.

The change was required due to the new nodes (new ethernet drivers). We made sure that this changes does not affect your results.

New Software installed

I installed new software on the cluster:

  • pvm-3.4.4-21
  • freeimage-3.10.0-3.42
  • freeimage-devel-3.10.0-3.42
  • mpfr-2.3.0-1
  • mpfr-devel-2.3.0-1
  • gmp-4.2.2-4
  • gmp-devel-4.2.2-4

This should accommodate most of the optimization people and allows the new version of the swarmanoid simulator to be executed on the cluster.

Please note that there is a installed software page which list all packages installed on the clusters nodes.

New nodes test installation

I installed the software on the new cluster nodes. Unfortunately, I’m having heavy problems with the network interface of these nodes. I installed a new kernel/better drivers on some of the new nodes for testing. It seems to work, but I would like to make sure that it
actually does.

So if you have time and something not-so-mission-critical to compute or just want to mess with the new cluster, go ahead! Go wild! And watch the network connection… :)

Nodes currently up for testing are c2-0, c2-1, c2-2, c2-3, c2-5 and c2-6. The queues for the new cluster 2 are named short2, medium2 and long2 (surprise!)

The specs of the new cluster can be found on the Cluster Composition Page.
