New nodes test installation

I installed the software on the new cluster nodes. Unfortunately, I’m having heavy problems with the network interface of these nodes. I installed a new kernel/better drivers on some of the new nodes for testing. It seems to work, but I would like to make sure that it
actually does.

So if you have time and something not-so-mission-critical to compute or just want to mess with the new cluster, go ahead! Go wild! And watch the network connection… :)

Nodes currently up for testing are c2-0, c2-1, c2-2, c2-3, c2-5 and c2-6. The queues for the new cluster 2 are named short2, medium2 and long2 (surprise!)

The specs of the new cluster can be found on the Cluster Composition Page.

Restricted user access to majorana

In order to protect better from broken programs and other faults, I restricted the users access. From now on, the following restrictions apply for all users:

  • max. 300 MB of memory
  • max. 100 active processes

These limits should not at all interfer with your daily work. They are only an upper boundary to prevent catastrophic failures.

Java 6.0 installed

I installed Java 6.0 on the cluster. Execute the two commands in your shell and/or script if you want to use it:

export PATH="/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_05/bin/:$PATH"
export JAVA_HOME="/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_05/"

Cluster Maintainance finished

The first part of the cluster maintainance has been finished. Here are the changes:

  • from now on, users can write up to 60 GB in /tmp
  • users cannot crash the system anymore by filling up the root partition

Up to now, this applies only to nodes of the old cluster (c0-xx). The conversion of the new cluster (c1-xx) is going to take place in ~2 weeks.
